As production of Porsche’s first 911 body style (now referred to as the long-hood series) was winding down, the lowest production model of the lineup was the S Targa. Only 925 were built for the world. The 2.4L engine produced 190hp. However, what is truly unique about this particular S is the factory equipment. This is one of the most optioned early S Targas I’ve ever seen.

This 911 S was built on January 5th, 1973 and imported by the Porsche dealer in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was highly optioned with the following factory equipment:

Canada Equipment
Limited Slip Differential 80%
Sport Seats, Left and Right
Rear Window Wiper
Chrome Strips Along Fender Cutouts
Muffler Skirt
Tinted Glass All Around
Fog Lights, White, Above Bumper (through the horn grills)
Electric Antenna, Right Only
Suppression Kit

It’s clear that this Porsche was special ordered by a unique individual. Interestingly, not many Porsches were delivered to the Nova Scotia area back then. Shortly thereafter, the car came to Toronto. In the early 1990’s, it was listed in the local paper for sale (see pic). A well-known and respected Porsche mechanic, Robert Gross, saw the listing and purchased the car. When he ordered the Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche, he was amazed at the number of options this 911 S came with. Also, when he purchased the car it only had about 39k-original miles. Outside of a light repaint Robert did (due to the clear coat failing), the rest of the car was original. He kept the car until 2011 but only put about another 500-miles on it total. Shortly before selling it, he did perform a complete drivetrain rebuild. This included NOS Mahle pistons and cylinders as well as going through the entire engine. Also, he sent the transmission out to Rudy Bartling to go through it and make any necessary repairs.

After nearly 20-years of ownership, Robert realized that he would never find the time to truly enjoy this rare Targa. So, he sold the car in 2011 to a dealer in Vancouver, BC. This owner only kept the car a year before selling it to the current owner here in Southern California. The current owner had the car shipped directly from Canada to Dieter Inzenhofer at Andial for an inspection and minor tuning. He found the car in excellent condition. Next, it went to Scott Hendry of Scott’s Independent in Anaheim, California. Scott and Dan installed new horns and fixed a small list of minor items. For the last seven years, the current owner has lightly used the car for local events and only added another 1,500-miles.

This 911 S looks just as you would expect a low-mile and well cared example would look like. The paint is stunning with minimal signs of use. It is clear this Porsche was very lightly used. The majority of the rubber, deco trim, chrome, and glass is original. The stainless targa bar is also in great shape with no major scratches and is wearing its original finish. The rear glass has a few light scratches from the rear wiper. The original Fuchs wheels are in excellent condition with no rash or major blemishes. They are wearing near full tread period-correct Michelin XWX tires. The brakes have more than 75% life remaining as well.

The chassis, trunk, and engine areas are all equally as pristine and certainly showcase the gentle life this 911 has had. All the finishes are factory original with no signs of major damage or corrosion. Everything is correct down to the valve covers, engine sound pad, fuse panel cover, spare, hardware, etc. The extremely rare factory original ski racks are in nice shape. The leather straps are original and some are broken (see pics).

The interior looks very fresh and smells of new leather. Everything is very tidy with minimal signs of use. The leather sport seats are in excellent condition as are the rear seats and carpet. The door panels are original and the pockets show slight age but are in very good shape. The targa top headliner does not sag and the has a nice snug fit to the body. The dash is perfect (including the speaker grill) with no cracks or warping. All the gauges work. The factory electric antenna also works as the radio powers up and sounds good. The knob between the vent controls and steering wheel is a rare factory installed knob to control front and rear speakers (see pic).

This 911 S drives fantastic. Everything feels very tight and responsive. It starts easily and holds a smooth idle. Once it warms up, the throttle response is excellent with strong power throughout the rev range. The transmission shifts smoothly in all gears with no grinding or slipping. The brakes have a nice initial bite with no fading or pulling. The car tracks straight and the handling feels crisp. This rare optioned S would be ideal for a variety of events from local shows to vintage tours.

This Porsche comes with the original tool kit, original spare, owner’s manual with cover, original Blaupunkt manuals, copy of the early Certificate of Authenticity (from 1992), targa top keys (2), 1-main key, original factory ski racks, and a pair of front Cocomats®.

We appreciate the countless calls from brokers and dealers. As much as we would love to quickly "wholesale" this car to industry partners so they can make a quick profit, the car is on consignment (as are all of our offerings) and the owners have the final say.

If you have actually taken the time to read this far in our detailed description, I can't imagine there are any questions you may have. However, if there is something I missed or you would prefer to hear the warm sound of a human voice (mine) reiterating the research I've provided above, I would be happy to help.

If you put our company name in Google (Autokennel) you will see that we have been a long time part of the Porsche community and have worked extremely hard to earn the positive reputation you will find. Of course, if you would like more references, you will find countless testimonials on our website as well.
