One of Two Black 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.8 RSRs Offered at Bonhams

One of only 49 produced and one of just two finished in black

A rare 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.8 RSR will be offered at Bonhams Cars on October 12, with an estimated value of up to $1,800,000. One of only 49 built and the 30th example produced, it is one of just two finished in black. This example has significant provenance, having been raced by Formula 1 driver Peter Revson at the 1973 Lime Rock 100 Miles, where he drove it to an impressive 6th overall.

The 2.8 RSR was developed as Porsche’s ultimate customer racing car, a stripped-down, lightweight evolution of the Carrera RS 2.7. With thinner steel, lightweight glass, minimal interior trim, and revised suspension, it weighed just 900kg.

Power came from a 2.8-liter flat-six producing 300 hp at 8,000 rpm, paired with a reinforced gearbox, limited-slip differential, and improved braking system. This combination made the 2.8 RSR a dominant force in the mid-1970s, securing victories at Daytona, Sebring, Nürburgring, and the Targa Florio against larger-capacity prototypes.

Chassis 0940 left the factory in March 1973, finished in black with red lettering, and was delivered to Brumos Porsche. First owned by Arnold Golding, it was raced at Lime Rock by Revson before competing in SCCA events. After an accident at Bridgehampton later that year, the car passed through several notable hands, including Porsche expert John Starkey and historic racer Phil Bagley.

In more recent years, 0940 has been active in historic racing and rallies, including the Tour Auto, Tour de Corse Historique, and Le Mans Classic. Restored and registered in France, it retains its period-correct details, including Recaro seats, roll cage, and dual-ignition racing engine.

It is accompanied by an extensive historical file with press articles, invoices, photographs, and expert reports, as well as a FIVA passport. With its rarity, competition pedigree, and association with Revson, chassis 0940 represents one of the most desirable 911 RSRs. Eligible for historic racing worldwide, it offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire Porsche’s ultimate 1970s customer racer.
