FOR SALE: 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort

One of only 292 examples produced

The legendary Porsche 959 Komfort will cross the block at Mecum Auctions on May 16, presenting collectors with an exceptionally preserved example of one of the most technologically advanced supercars of the 1980s. Showing just 3,521 miles on the odometer, this unrestored 959 Komfort is among the rarest and most historically significant road-going Porsches ever produced, with only 292 customer cars built during the model’s limited production run.

Powered by Porsche’s groundbreaking twin-turbocharged 2.8-liter flat-six engine, the 959 generated a formidable 450 horsepower through a sophisticated sequential turbocharging system paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and electronically controlled all-wheel drive. Capable of approaching 200 MPH, the 959 redefined high-performance engineering with blistering acceleration, advanced traction management, and extraordinary stability at speed.

Derived from the 930 Turbo platform but extensively reengineered, the 959 employed cutting-edge lightweight materials including aluminum, polyurethane, and pioneering automotive applications of DuPont Kevlar. Extensive aerodynamic development yielded near-zero lift characteristics, while advanced chassis technologies included adjustable ride height, configurable dampers, ventilated ABS-equipped brakes, and run-flat tires.

This particular example features special 17-inch lightweight magnesium wheels, heated power-adjustable sport seats, power windows, and an alarm system. Accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, owner’s manuals, repair documentation, and detailed Canepa service records, the car was imported from Japan in the early 2000s and federally modified by Canepa to comply with U.S. emissions standards.

Subsequent servicing by Canepa in 2012 and 2015 further reinforces the car’s provenance and meticulous preservation, making it a landmark collector-grade Porsche from the height of the marque’s technological ambition.
