Now offered for sale on Bring a Trailer, this 2016 Porsche 911 R represents one of the most driver-focused derivatives of the 991-generation 911. Conceived partly in response to enthusiasts who lamented the GT3 RS being available exclusively with Porsche’s rapid PDK dual-clutch transmission, the 911 R returned to the fundamentals: a naturally aspirated engine, a six-speed manual gearbox, reduced weight, and an uncompromising focus on driver involvement.
Unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the 911 R paired the GT3 RS’s high-revving 4.0-liter flat-six with a manual transaxle rather than an automated gearbox. Rated at 500 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque, the naturally aspirated engine sends its output to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential with Porsche Torque Vectoring.
Unlike the GT3 RS, which emphasized ultimate circuit performance, the 911 R was engineered around engagement. Its suspension and steering received model-specific calibration, while extensive weight reduction—including polycarbonate rear glazing and the deletion of the GT3 RS’s enormous rear wing—cut approximately 110 pounds. Carbon-fiber body components, a magnesium roof panel, and other lightweight construction further reinforced its road-focused character.
Only 991 examples were produced for the 2016 model year, making the 911 R an exceptionally scarce modern Porsche. This example is chassis No. 519 and was purchased new by its current owner. Finished in white with contrasting red stripes, it combines classic Porsche-inspired aesthetics with contemporary performance hardware.
Its specification includes 20-inch center-lock wheels with Michelin tires, ceramic-composite brakes with yellow six- and four-piston calipers, rear-axle steering, adjustable suspension, and a front-axle lift system. LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System and a retractable rear spoiler complete the exterior.
Inside, black leather carbon-fiber bucket seats feature Houndstooth-style cloth inserts and 911 R embroidery, complemented by extensive carbon-fiber trim and contrasting stitching. Comfort and technology remain intact with air conditioning, Bose audio, navigation, cruise control, and the Light Design Package.
The 911 R’s combination of rarity, motorsport-derived engineering, manual transmission, and naturally aspirated character makes it one of the defining enthusiast-focused 911s of the modern era.
