The 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 is among the rarest and most uncompromising air-cooled 911s ever produced, and RM Sotheby’s will present this exceptional example at their upcoming Monterey auction next month. With an estimated value of $2.0 million to $2.5 million, this Speed Yellow icon is one of only 55 examples built, making it a centerpiece for serious Porsche collectors.
Introduced as the ultimate evolution of the 964-generation Carrera RS, the RS 3.8 was created in 1993 to homologate Porsche’s successful 3.8 RSR race car. While the standard 964 already represented a major engineering leap with its 3.6-liter flat-six, coil-spring suspension, and improved aerodynamics, the RS 3.8 elevated the formula with an uncompromising focus on lightweight performance and motorsport capability.
Distinguished by its aggressive wide-body stance, towering rear wing, and distinctive three-piece Speedline wheels, the RS 3.8 underwent an extensive weight-reduction program. Aluminum body panels, thinner glass, minimal interior trim, deleted rear seats, and the removal of sound insulation and numerous luxury features helped cut approximately 600 pounds compared to a standard Carrera 2. The result was a razor-sharp driving experience worthy of Porsche’s racing heritage.
Power comes from a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six producing 300 horsepower, paired with a strengthened six-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Performance remains impressive even by modern standards, with a 0-60 mph sprint in under five seconds and a top speed approaching 170 mph.
Completed in December 1993, this numbers-matching example was originally supplied through German racing driver Helmut Reis’ Eco-Tec Consulting before being exported to Japan shortly after delivery. It remained there until 2015, when it entered the United States under a DOT “Show and Display” exemption and became part of a notable Porsche collection. Acquired by its current owner in 2018, the car has accumulated just 8,117 kilometers (approximately 5,044 miles).
Presented in striking Speed Yellow over a purposeful black and grey leather competition interior, the RS 3.8 is offered with its owner’s books, tool roll, and supporting documentation. Now exempt from previous import restrictions due to its age, this extraordinarily rare Porsche represents one of the finest and most collectible air-cooled 911s ever built, offering exceptional historical significance and lasting investment appeal.
