Porsche has expanded the legendary GT3 formula into new territory with the debut of the 911 GT3 S/C, its first open-top GT3. Blending the visceral excitement of a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six, a six-speed manual gearbox, and razor-sharp GT3 dynamics with the freedom of roof-down driving, the new model redefines what a high-performance convertible can be.

While Richard Hammond was unable to attend the launch, fellow presenter Alex traveled to Germany to discover whether Porsche had finally created Hammond’s dream sports car—and whether the GT3 S/C could satisfy even the brand’s most demanding enthusiasts.

At the heart of the car lies Porsche’s acclaimed 510-horsepower flat-six engine, capable of screaming to 9,000 rpm while delivering an unmistakable soundtrack that becomes even more immersive with the roof folded away. Performance remains serious, with a 0–62 mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed approaching 200 mph.

Despite initial skepticism from Porsche traditionalists, the GT3 S/C has been engineered as a genuine GT product rather than a simple convertible adaptation. It shares much of its chassis architecture with the GT3 Touring, including double-wishbone front suspension, rear-wheel steering, and the same precise steering system. Extensive lightweight engineering—including magnesium components and a manual-only transmission—keeps curb weight below 1,500 kilograms, preserving the sharp handling expected from the GT division.

Unlike track-focused GT models, however, the GT3 S/C prioritizes driver engagement on real roads. Rather than chasing lap records, Porsche has focused on creating a car that rewards every drive with exceptional balance, confidence, and mechanical connection. The manual gearbox, direct steering, and naturally aspirated engine combine to deliver one of the most involving driving experiences available today.

Although its premium price places it firmly in the realm of exclusivity, the 911 GT3 S/C succeeds in offering something remarkably rare: the uncompromised dynamics of a GT3 paired with the exhilaration of open-air motoring. For many enthusiasts, it may well represent Porsche’s ultimate convertible.
