Ultra-Rare 1989 Porsche 959 Sport Could Fetch Up to $6 Million at Auction

One of just two examples factory-equipped with air conditioning

One of the rarest and most technologically significant supercars ever built, this 1989 Porsche 959 Sport is set to cross the block at the 2026 Monterey Auction with an estimate of up to $6 million. As one of just 29 Sport variants produced, it represents the ultimate evolution of Porsche’s groundbreaking 959 program.

Originally conceived as a homologation special for Group B rallying, the 959 redefined the performance car landscape with innovations decades ahead of their time. Its sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, lightweight composite construction, adjustable suspension, tire-pressure monitoring, and twin-turbocharged 2.85-liter flat-six engine established benchmarks that would later become common among modern supercars.

The 959 Sport elevated the formula further by prioritizing weight reduction and performance. Compared to the standard Komfort model, it shed approximately 220 pounds through the removal of luxury features such as the stereo, adaptive suspension, passenger-side mirror, and air conditioning, replacing the latter with a fixed coilover suspension, racing harnesses, and a leather-wrapped roll cage. Power also increased to an impressive 508 horsepower, making it the most focused road-going version of the 959.

This example, chassis 5013, stands out even among the exclusive Sport production. Finished in Grand Prix White over a Grey cloth interior, it is one of only 11 cars painted in this color combination and remarkably one of just two known 959 Sports factory-equipped with air conditioning. Although originally intended for an American buyer, regulatory hurdles redirected delivery to South Korea, where it joined the collection of a prominent businessman.

The car later entered the ownership of former Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld in 2007. Recognizing its significance, Heidfeld commissioned an extensive restoration by Porsche Classic, completed in 2021 after a substantial investment of nearly €115,000. The overhaul returned the complex drivetrain and Motronic engine management system to factory specification.

Now offered from just its third owner, the numbers-matching Porsche has covered only 4,788 kilometers (2,976 miles) since new. Accompanied by its Porsche Classic Technical Certificate, ownership documentation, original manuals, warranty book, and tool kit, this exceptionally original and meticulously preserved 959 Sport presents a rare opportunity to acquire one of Porsche’s most celebrated engineering masterpieces.
