Hand-Built Porsche 911 European RS by Thornley Kelham Could Fetch $650,000 at Auction

One of 15 Thornley Kelham European RS built

A highly exclusive 1972 Porsche 911 European RS by Thornley Kelham will cross the block without reserve at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction, carrying an estimate of up to $650,000. One of only 15 customer-built examples, this meticulously engineered restomod represents Thornley Kelham’s vision of what the classic air-cooled Porsche 911 might have become if its development had continued uninterrupted.

Based in Gloucestershire, England, Thornley Kelham earned its reputation through concours-winning restorations before expanding into bespoke reinterpretations of iconic classics. The European RS reflects that philosophy by blending the unmistakable character of the legendary early 911—particularly the celebrated 1973 Carrera RS 2.7—with modern engineering, precision, and reliability.

Originally built from a 1972 Porsche 911 E, this example underwent nearly 6,000 hours of craftsmanship and engineering. Its chassis was seam-welded and reinforced before receiving lightweight carbon-fiber body panels, motorsport-tuned suspension, high-performance racing brakes, forged lightweight wheels, polycarbonate glazing, titanium hardware, and numerous weight-saving enhancements designed to maximize agility and driving engagement.

Power comes from the desirable optional 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, developed from the durable Porsche 993 engine architecture. Featuring billet CNC-ported cylinder heads, bespoke camshafts, individual throttle bodies, and a lightweight Inconel-and-titanium exhaust system, the engine delivers a claimed 425 horsepower while revving to an exhilarating 9,000 rpm. A close-ratio G50 manual gearbox with shortened final-drive gearing complements the high-revving powerplant, providing a driving experience inspired by Porsche’s modern GT models while preserving the raw, analogue feel of the original air-cooled 911.

The exterior is finished in a rich dark blue-green paint reminiscent of Porsche’s iconic Aquamarine shade, accented by distinctive bronze-finished brightwork. Inside, the cabin combines premium cognac leather upholstery with traditional black-and-white Pepita cloth inserts, creating an elegant balance between vintage styling and contemporary craftsmanship. At the time of cataloguing, the odometer displayed just 252 miles.

As demand for elite, factory-quality restomods continues to grow, the Thornley Kelham European RS has emerged as one of the most exclusive and meticulously executed reinterpretations of the classic Porsche 911. Combining exceptional craftsmanship, cutting-edge engineering, and extreme rarity, it represents a compelling opportunity for collectors seeking one of the finest modernized air-cooled 911s ever produced.
