Among today’s ultra-luxury performance SUVs, outright acceleration has become just as important as practicality. To discover which European heavyweight dominates in a straight line, Mat Watson and his team from carwow assembled three of the segment’s fastest contenders: the Ferrari Purosangue, Lamborghini Urus Performante, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. A series of standing-start drag races, rolling acceleration tests, and emergency braking runs revealed just how differently these high-performance machines deliver their impressive power.
The Ferrari Purosangue relied on its naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12, producing 725 horsepower and 716 Nm of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Weighing approximately 2.1 tonnes, the Ferrari combined exotic engine character with SUV practicality.
Alongside it stood the Lamborghini Urus Performante, powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 generating 666 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, also paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive.
The wildcard was the Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. Despite carrying the greatest mass at roughly 2.6 tonnes, its plug-in hybrid powertrain delivered a staggering 1,156 horsepower and 1,500 Nm of combined torque, making it the clear favorite on paper.
The opening quarter-mile race immediately demonstrated the Porsche’s extraordinary capability. While the Ferrari suffered a relatively soft launch and the Lamborghini initially gained an advantage, the Cayenne surged ahead effortlessly and crossed the finish line well before either rival. Although the Ferrari’s V12 enabled it to recover ground later in the run, the Porsche’s overwhelming torque advantage proved impossible to overcome.
Subsequent rolling races only reinforced the hybrid SUV’s dominance. Whether accelerating from 50 mph in comfort mode or launching from lower speeds in the sportiest settings, the Cayenne consistently disappeared into the distance. Even when intentionally giving both rivals a significant head start, the Porsche reeled them in with remarkable ease, highlighting the immense instant torque provided by its electrified drivetrain.
The Ferrari demonstrated stronger mid-range acceleration than the Lamborghini during several rolling contests, allowing it to edge ahead despite the Urus’ impressive twin-turbo V8. However, neither could challenge the Porsche once full power was deployed. Braking performance produced another surprise. Despite being the heaviest vehicle in the lineup, the Cayenne stopped noticeably sooner than both the Ferrari and Lamborghini, showcasing the effectiveness of Porsche’s advanced chassis and braking technologies.
The final best-of-five drag race removed any remaining doubt. With launch control fully engaged, the Cayenne delivered an even more explosive start, completing the standing quarter mile in just 10.0 seconds. The Lamborghini Urus Performante followed with an 11.5-second pass, while the Ferrari Purosangue crossed the line moments later in 11.6 seconds.
