Ask any Porsche enthusiast what their favorite 911 model is, and many will cite the 1973 2.7-liter 911 Carrera RS. But this recognition didn’t come about through conservative thinking. Fortunately, Porsche’s early days were characterized by talented engineers who weren’t afraid to step out of their own shadows, and as a result, they created some of the most successful sports and racing cars of all time. Launched at the Paris Motor Show in October 1972, the 911 Carrera RS dragged Porsche kicking and screaming into the global spotlight. Just as Bob Dylan tore up the music rulebook, the 911 Carrera RS became the reluctant hero of the 911 family. The ultimate renegade, it was brash, vocal, and confrontational, yet at the same time instrumental in defining Porsche’s position on the international sports car stage.
