78 Days at Sea! Carrera GTS Travels to Tahiti

Steve McQueen-Inspired Porsche Completes 23,000-Kilometer Journey to Tahiti

Gulfblue Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Completes 23,000-Kilometer Journey to Tahiti

A specially configured Porsche 911 Carrera GTS has completed a 23,000-kilometer ocean voyage from Germany to French Polynesia, arriving in Tahiti after 78 days at sea. Finished in Gulfblue through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, the 992-generation sports car pays tribute to Steve McQueen, the Porsche 917, and the marque’s Le Mans racing heritage.

A Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Inspired by Steve McQueen and Le Mans

The 911 Carrera GTS features a Paint to Sample Gulfblue finish inspired by the Porsche 917 associated with Steve McQueen’s 1971 film Le Mans. The specification combines the distinctive exterior color with custom leather upholstery, silver stitching, coordinated seat belts, a titanium exhaust system, and carbon wheel accents. Lety developed the configuration with Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, incorporating design references to Porsche’s endurance-racing history. Pouvil, who already owns Porsche Cayenne, Macan, and 911 models, immediately approved the design. The Gulfblue Carrera GTS was subsequently shipped to French Polynesia, where Lety’s dealership serves a relatively small but dedicated Porsche community.

The 23,000-Kilometer Journey From Germany to Tahiti

The Carrera GTS departed Bremerhaven aboard the vehicle carrier Höegh Trove on February 20, 2026. Its route crossed the Atlantic, continued south along Africa’s western coastline, rounded the continent’s southern tip, and crossed the Indian Ocean toward Australia. After following Australia’s southern coastline, the ship reached Auckland, New Zealand, on April 28. The Porsche was then transferred to a container aboard the Capitaine Kupe, which departed the following day for the final approximately 4,000 kilometers to Tahiti.

The vessel arrived at Papeete’s Motu Uta container terminal on May 9 at 2 p.m., completing a journey of approximately 12,400 nautical miles, or 23,000 kilometers. The car was subsequently transported to Centre Porsche Polynésie Française, approximately 18,000 kilometers from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen in a straight line. According to the original account, it is Porsche’s most geographically distant dealership from the manufacturer’s headquarters.

First Drive on the Roads of Mooréa

Following delivery, Pouvil and Lety took the Carrera GTS aboard a ferry from Tahiti to neighboring Mooréa, where approximately 60 kilometers of coastal roads provide a scenic driving route. Their drive included the winding ascent to Belvédère d’Opunohu, a lookout approximately 240 meters above sea level. The route crosses an ancient volcanic crater before climbing through sweeping corners and tight hairpins overlooking the island’s two prominent bays.

Porsche Ownership in French Polynesia

Centre Porsche Polynésie Française operates in a territory comprising 118 islands and atolls, with a population of approximately 280,000 people. Lety reports annual sales of just 20 to 30 Porsche vehicles, making customer relationships and aftersales support particularly important. The dealership’s location also presents unusual logistical challenges, illustrated by the Carrera GTS’s lengthy delivery journey.

The Gulfblue 911 may receive additional orange accents inspired by Porsche’s 1970s racing cars. Lety and Pouvil discussed the possibility during their return trip to Tahiti, although no final design or installation schedule was announced.
