In this episode of The Driver’s Seat, Henry Catchpole reviews an extraordinary Porsche 959. This isn’t just any 959; it’s the rare Sport version and, more specifically, prototype F9—one of the very first. This car could be the fastest 959 ever to leave the factory.
The Sport was already about 100kg lighter than the Komfort model, and this prototype lacks extras like a roll cage, potentially making it 200kg lighter. With an uprated 508bhp engine, it rockets from 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds. The 959 was a technological marvel, designed for both the Dakar Rally and Le Mans.
Its advanced all-wheel-drive system and sequential turbochargers—where a second turbo kicks in above 4000rpm—deliver immense power. This prototype feels even more raw, featuring unassisted steering and passive suspension, making it a more analog experience often associated with its rival, the Ferrari F40.
