CAR magazine takes viewers trackside in southern Portugal to compare two extreme Porsche 911 racing cars: the GT3 Cup and GT3 R. Both are purpose-built 911s stripped of comfort and refinement, designed solely for performance, yet they serve different racing niches.
The 911 GT3 Cup is lighter than its road-going counterpart at 1,260 kg, with a slight power boost to 535 hp, wider tires, adjustable swan-neck rear wing, carbon bodywork, and a digital dashboard with a Formula-style steering wheel. On track, it delivers razor-sharp throttle response, exceptional braking, and immense rear-end traction, rewarding drivers who trust the chassis and manage its sensitivity.

The 911 GT3 R, designed for endurance racing against Audi, BMW, and Lamborghini, weighs around 1,250 kg with a 4.2 L flat-six producing 557 hp, longer wheelbase, multi-link rear suspension, and larger aerodynamic components for stability. It feels broader, smoother, and more planted, ideal for long stints, while still retaining the visceral thrill and responsiveness expected of a Porsche 911 race car.

Together, these two 911s elevate the GT3 RS experience, offering raw, immersive driving, exceptional engineering, and accessibility for customer racing, proving Porsche’s commitment to making high-performance motorsport machines both thrilling and practical.
