Completed in February 1973, this 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring represents one of the marque’s most celebrated homologation specials and remains among the purest expressions of Porsche’s early motorsport engineering philosophy.
Offered through RM Sotheby’s with an estimate of $410,000 to $550,000, the car is one of only three Carrera RS 2.7 examples originally delivered new to Luxembourg and one of just 87 finished in the iconic Signal Yellow exterior over a black leatherette cabin.
Factory equipment was intentionally restrained, with headrests for both front seats listed as the sole optional feature, preserving the lightweight touring specification that defined the model’s appeal. Importantly, the car retains its matching-original chassis, engine, gearbox, and bodywork, further reinforcing its desirability among serious Porsche collectors.
Its documented history traces back to southern France in the early 1980s before it was exported to the United States in 1983. In 1986, the RS changed hands through an unusual trade involving an Indian Scout jacket and a Pletka painting, a transaction that has since become part of the car’s colorful provenance.
A comprehensive restoration began in 1987 when the odometer displayed approximately 37,295 miles. The engine was rebuilt by Farmer Automotive in Indianapolis, while the chassis was refinished in its factory-correct Signal Yellow and reassembled using new OEM hardware.
After spending two decades in careful static storage, it was acquired by its current owner in 2015 and relocated to The Netherlands, the RS has been sparingly exercised, including participation in the 2024 Hainan Open International Classic Car Tour in China. Following its return to Europe in early 2025, the car underwent another full service.
A recent inspection by noted marque specialist Andy Prill of Prill Porsche Classics confirmed the car’s authenticity and originality, while also identifying evidence of period competition use between 1973 and 1983. Despite this history, the RS retains its original shell and factory floors, preserving its standing as an exceptionally genuine Carrera RS 2.7 Touring.
