Marketplace: 1955 Porsche 356 ‘Pre-A’ Speedster

Now available through Gooding & Co is this matching-numbers sports car icon

Conceived largely with the American market in mind, the Porsche 356 Speedster reduced the company’s sporting formula to its essentials. A low, removable windshield, sparse interior, lightweight construction, and responsive handling gave the car a purposeful character that quickly found favor with driving enthusiasts. Decades later, the Speedster stands among the most recognizable—and sought-after—sports cars of the postwar period.

Chassis 80625 is an early “Pre-A” Speedster, displaying the distinctive details and straightforward character associated with Porsche’s earliest production cars. Of particular note, it retains its matching-numbers 1500 engine and original body panels, important attributes for a model whose competition history and decades of use have left many surviving examples substantially altered or restored.

The car underwent a comprehensive restoration by Porsche specialist Dave Imes of Apex Auto Body. Finished in Speedster Blue, a rare color offered exclusively on early “Pre-A” examples, it is complemented by a carefully detailed interior and period-correct appointments. The restoration preserves the simplicity of the original design while reflecting the attention to detail associated with Porsche’s early sports cars.

With its early specification, matching-numbers engine, original bodywork, specialist restoration, and distinctive period color, chassis 80625 presents a compelling combination of authenticity and provenance. More than seven decades after the Speedster first appeared, it remains a particularly direct expression of Porsche’s early approach to the sports car: light, purposeful, and focused on the driving experience.
