FOR SALE: 2016 Porsche 911 R

Number 744 of just 991 units built worldwide

The 2016 Porsche 911 R is one of the most significant modern 911s ever produced, embodying Porsche’s commitment to driving purity at a time when performance technology was rapidly becoming more digital. Now offered through RM Sotheby’s, this exceptionally preserved example presents collectors with an opportunity to acquire one of just 991 units built worldwide—a model widely regarded as the definitive analog expression of the 991-generation 911.

The 911 R was introduced at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in response to enthusiasts who admired the phenomenal capabilities of the 991 GT3 RS but lamented its exclusive use of Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch transmission. Listening to its most dedicated customers, Porsche paired the GT3 RS’s naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six producing 500 horsepower with a six-speed manual gearbox and a lightweight single-mass flywheel, creating a more immersive and engaging driving experience.

Rather than pursuing outright lap records, the 911 R emphasized driver involvement. Porsche removed the GT3 RS’s towering rear wing, substituted the rear and quarter windows with lightweight polycarbonate panels, and implemented additional weight-saving measures that reduced mass by approximately 110 pounds. Heritage-inspired details, including Pepita tartan seat inserts and classic racing stripes, reinforced the model’s connection to Porsche’s legendary past while maintaining contemporary performance.

This particular example is especially noteworthy as one of only five 911 Rs originally allocated to Finland. It left the factory with an extensive list of desirable options, including the 90-liter fuel tank, front-axle lift system, Sport Chrono Package, LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, leather dashboard trim, carbon-fiber illuminated door sills, and black-painted wheels.

The car later relocated to Japan, where it was imported in early 2020 before being acquired by its current owner in 2023. Showing just 4,100 kilometers from new, it has been meticulously maintained, with its latest service completed at Porsche Centre Hamadayama in Tokyo during October 2024. Maintenance included fresh engine oil and brake fluid, replacement of the rear window, and installation of a new engine-lid gas strut.

Minor cosmetic updates—including silver racing stripes, matching PORSCHE side graphics, and silver-finished wheels—can be easily reversed, as the graphics are applied as removable decals. Accompanied by its Certificate of Conformity, original owner’s manuals, and service documentation, this exceptionally low-mileage 911 R represents one of the most collectible and rewarding modern Porsche road cars, seamlessly blending motorsport-derived performance with the timeless appeal of a manual transmission.
