Background
Porsche is famously known for its rich design history and for drawing on its lineage of historic sports cars to inject retro design with modern capabilities. The Sport Classic name, first introduced in 2009 with the 997, drew inspiration from the color Dolphin Grey from the Porsche 356 era to create Sport Classic Grey, and from the rear ducktail of the acclaimed 2.7 RS from the early 1970s.
The Turbo widebody, at the time exclusive to all-wheel-drive and turbo cars, added stance to the 997, along with several other design callbacks that made it an instant classic. For the 992, Porsche decided to take that same motorsports formula and let the designers in Stuttgart extend farther than before, yielding this car: the 2023 Porsche 911 Sport Classic.
The 2023 Sport Classic is an exercise in marrying the best driving dynamics with styling that matches. Limited to only 1,250 examples worldwide, the Sport Classic instantly became a collectible. With a 543-horsepower 3.7L twin-turbo engine paired to a 7-speed manual transmission (the only transmission offered), power is sent to the rear wheels only, a callback to the original Porsche 911 Turbo first launched in 1974.
Throwbacks to previous 911s include wood trim on the dashboard, a two-tone black-and-cognac leather interior, pepita fabric inserts, analog RPM and sport chrono gauges, and, of course, the signature ducktail spoiler over the engine at the rear.

The Best of Everything
Just because the Sport Classic is retro-minded, it doesn’t mean that it was lacking in the technology department. As part of Porsche’s continual melding of past and present, each Sport Classic was heavily optioned by the factory, with the most popular options. This included 18-way Adaptive Sports Seats with heating, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, Rear Axle Steering, Front Axle Lift, LED-Matrix headlights in black with PDLS, Sports Seats with leather backs, Extended Dashboard and door panels in leather, and more.
Customers could choose from a limited range of additional options, though many found the standard equipment more than adequate. All in all, all Sport Classics were 911s primed to be the best driving rear-wheel-drive cars offered by Porsche, and unsurprisingly, they were met with critical acclaim amongst owners and the automotive press.
