The start of modern vintage racing in America
Steve Earle founded the Monterey Historic Automobile Races in 1974. A racer and vintage car enthusiast himself, Earle wanted to create an event where historic racers could return to the track as living, breathing machines, and not just conversation pieces in people’s collections. With the cooperation of Laguna Seca Raceway, Earle organized the first event showcasing rare and significant cars in action once more. The inaugural event was a resounding success, and it quickly became one of the “bucket-list” events of what has grown to be “Monterey Car Week.”
