Porsches under the Rising Sun – 906 K Carrera 6

The Porsche 906 and its winning design

In Japan, the 906 would also write an important chapter of its history.

Considered one of the most distinctive racing designs of the past century, the Porsche Carrera 6, better known as the 906, was also one of the most remarkable pieces of German engineering of its age.

As is well known, the model’s origins trace to a plethora of factors, the main one being a management shift at Porsche AG: the appointment of Ferdinand Piëch as the new leader of the company’s experimental and racing vehicle design department in 1965. As one of his first acts in the new position, Piëch voiced an urgent need for a successor to the 904, the manufacturer’s sports division flagship until then.
