Launching the Firehawk Series

For the 1985 Sports Car Racing scene in the USA, IMSA had decided to start a new series. This would be a “Showroom Stock” series, basically running stock dealer road cars with roll cages and basic safety equipment. The series was called the Firestone Firehawk Series, as the spec tires were supplied by Firestone and were the Firehawk high-performance road tires.

Many types of cars were eligible. Late in 1984, after our successful run to the GTO Championship with Wayne Baker and the IMSA 934 in 1983, several of us on the team were approached by our local Porsche dealer, Carlsen Porsche of Palo Alto, California. They wanted to participate in this series with Porsche 944s.
