This brutally honest review examines a 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, focusing on character and driving feel rather than raw statistics. The 997.1 Turbo pairs a twin-turbo Mezger flat-six with a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic, producing about 500 horsepower and a claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.8 seconds.
The Tiptronic gearbox is smooth and durable but dated, with slow kickdowns and awkward steering-wheel buttons for manual shifts. Performance builds dramatically after 3,000 rpm, where noticeable turbo lag gives way to rapid acceleration and a distinctive surge of power. Below that range, the engine feels subdued and quiet.
The interior is well built and comfortable, with classic five-dial gauges and simple controls, making it easy to live with over long distances despite road and tire noise in the cabriolet. While extremely fast and capable, its refinement and turbocharged character make it feel less emotional than naturally aspirated alternatives.
