Porsche’s air-cooled 911 swan song still resonates

993 C4S: ‘The Turbo without the turbo.’

Sometimes there is a consensus that a particular design looks ‘just right.’ That description certainly applies to the 993, which is perhaps today revered more than any other 911. But its styling and the fact that it was the last of the air-cooled 911s do not entirely account for its popularity almost three decades after production ceased. We look at the developmental background of this 911, as well as aspects of ownership, and dispel perhaps one or two myths about its seeming infallibility. This article covers essentially the base C2 and C4 cars, which account for almost 90% of production. The other versions comprise mainly the Turbo, of which 6300 were made, and the low-volume models, the RS, GT2, and Porsche Cup cars.
