Created as Porsche’s answer to enthusiasts who lamented the absence of a manual transmission in the 991-generation GT3 RS, the 911 R paired the RS’s naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine with a six-speed manual gearbox. Rather than pursuing outright lap times, Porsche engineered the model around driver engagement.
Weight-saving measures, including polycarbonate rear glazing, reduced mass compared to the GT3 RS, while bespoke suspension and steering calibration, together with the sought-after single-mass flywheel, delivered a more visceral and involving driving experience. Production was limited to just 991 examples worldwide, instantly elevating the model to modern classic status.
