Some people grow up obsessed with Porsche. Others, like Stuttcars contributor Terence Wah, take a different road. His journey into the world of Stuttgart came after years of loving cars from a distance. Once he got his first taste, there was no going back.
Terence’s story started with Japanese performance cars, especially Hondas. But over the past seven years, his focus shifted toward Porsches and the adrenaline of high-performance driver education (HPDE).
Today, as a Porsche Club of America National Instructor, he helps new drivers experience the brand in its natural habitat: the racetrack.
The First Porsche
Terence started paying serious attention to Porsche around the time the 997 generation was being phased out in favor of the 991. While the dream was always a Turbo model, the budget didn’t stretch that far. So he picked up a 2012 991 Carrera S, one of the early builds from the new generation.
That car was the beginning of something much bigger. Since then, he’s owned a Taycan and two RS models, including his current favorite: a 2024 718 Cayman GT4 RS.
Why Porsche?
“Porsche just makes incredible cars,” Terence says. That’s something many owners agree on. But for him, the draw is a combination of precision engineering, top-tier reliability, and the energy behind the brand.
He also loves the community, especially those who take their cars to the track. “The most serious and dedicated track go-ers, in my experience, tend to go with Porsche as their weapon of choice,” he says. “There’s a solid network, a wealth of knowledge, and real camaraderie.”
Even his nomination to become a PCA National Instructor came through a connection at the dealership. Miles, the GM at Porsche Centre Calgary, put his name forward. “It does feel like a big family.”
The Porsche Experience
“There’s no substitute for a Porsche,” Terence says, quoting the famous tagline. But for him, it’s not only about performance. It’s about the people, the culture, and the shared experience.
Porsche ownership brings you into a world of track days, deep conversations, and a genuine appreciation for what these cars can do. While some models have quirks or come with higher costs, Terence believes it’s all worth it as long as you go in with clear expectations.
Looking Ahead
Right now, Terence is loving life with the Cayman GT4 RS. But his attention is starting to drift back toward the 911, particularly the upcoming 992.2 GT3 with a manual transmission.
“I miss being behind the wheel of a 911,” he says. And since he’s yet to scratch the itch of owning a manual Porsche, that box still needs ticking.
And what about a GT2 RS someday? He laughs. “It’s totally romantic. Maybe a little far-fetched… but who knows?”
