FOR SALE: 1990 Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer – Classic Services – The McQueen Commission

A reimagined 1990 Porsche 911 by Singer in tribute to Steve McQueen

Few Porsche 911 restorations capture the intersection of motorsport heritage, understated design, and modern engineering as effectively as this 1990 Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer, now offered for sale through RM Sotheby’s. Dubbed “The McQueen Commission,” this exceptionally specified example draws inspiration from the Slate Grey 1970 Porsche 911 S owned by Hollywood icon Steve McQueen and famously associated with the 1971 film Le Mans.

Originally commissioned by a longstanding British collector of exotic and supercars, the car was completed by Singer Vehicle Design in May 2019. Based on a UK-specification 911, it was finished in Paint-to-Sample Attack Grey over a black leather interior, deliberately echoing the restrained appearance of McQueen’s celebrated Porsche. Its most distinctive detail is a beautifully crafted, Le Mans-inspired wooden gear knob, turned from layered balsa to evoke the distinctive shift knob of the Porsche 917 driven by McQueen in the film.

Beneath its carefully reimagined exterior sits a formidable 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six developed by renowned engine builder Ed Pink Racing. Specified with high-performance camshafts, a ceramic plenum exhaust manifold, and no catalytic converters, the engine delivers a more focused interpretation of classic 911 performance. Power reaches the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission, preserving the mechanical engagement central to Singer’s philosophy.

The chassis specification is equally comprehensive. Öhlins adjustable dampers work alongside premium Brembo steel brakes with red calipers, while additional engineering upgrades include external fuel and oil filters, a carbon-fibre roof, and extensive chassis seam welding. The latter was a $10,000 factory-specified option, underscoring the attention devoted to structural rigidity and driving precision.

Inside, the cabin combines traditional Porsche details with contemporary craftsmanship. Black leather-trimmed carbon-fibre bucket seats, a Momo Prototipo steering wheel, and an early-style 911 instrument cluster establish a purposeful vintage atmosphere. Modern convenience comes through a Porsche Classic Navigation head unit equipped with Apple CarPlay.

The McQueen Commission also occupies a relatively exclusive position within Singer’s history. It is one of just 90 right-hand-drive examples produced under the company’s Classic Services programme, approximately half of which were originally delivered to the UK. Retained by its commissioning owner for around five years, the car has remained in Britain and accumulated just 4,533 miles since its 2019 restoration.

Offered in partnership with Singer Vehicle Design, the car includes a 12-month manufacturer warranty, adding further reassurance to an already compelling proposition. More than a beautifully executed restoration, The McQueen Commission represents a carefully considered tribute to one of Porsche’s most celebrated enthusiasts.
