Porsche’s latest performance flagships take fundamentally different approaches to speed. In a new carwow drag-racing challenge, Mat Watson pits the all-electric Cayenne Turbo against the hybrid 911 Turbo S in a series of standing-start and rolling quarter-mile races, exploring whether the SUV’s substantial power advantage can overcome the sports car’s lower weight.

The Cayenne Turbo EV features a dual-motor powertrain producing 1,156 horsepower and 1,500 Nm of torque. Weighing approximately 2,645 kilograms, the electric SUV relies on its instantaneous torque delivery and all-wheel-drive traction to launch with tremendous force. However, its considerable mass and larger frontal area present challenges as speeds increase.

The 911 Turbo S counters with a 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine paired with hybrid assistance, producing 711 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. Power reaches all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. At approximately 1,740 kilograms, the sports car weighs around 900 kilograms less than the Cayenne, giving it a significant advantage in power-to-weight ratio.

The initial standing-start contest highlights the importance of launch control, tire preparation and driver timing. The subsequent rolling races introduce further variables, including driving modes, transmission settings and the Cayenne’s temporary power-boost function. Deploying that additional performance at the right moment becomes critical, as the boost is available only for a limited duration.

Battery charge also becomes a consideration as repeated acceleration runs place demands on the Cayenne’s electric powertrain. Meanwhile, the 911’s hybrid assistance and rapid gear changes offer a different approach to maintaining acceleration across the quarter-mile. The comparison illustrates why peak output alone cannot determine which car performs best in every situation.

The challenge also includes braking tests, where the substantial difference in vehicle mass provides another opportunity to examine the engineering demands facing both models. Further standing-start runs then put launch consistency and power delivery back in the spotlight, with the drivers adjusting their strategies as the competition unfolds.

Can the Cayenne’s 1,156 horsepower overcome its considerable weight, or will the lighter 911 Turbo S demonstrate the advantages of a more compact performance package? Watch the full Carwow video to follow the complete showdown, see how the cars respond to each challenge and discover which Porsche delivers the most convincing performance.
