The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 remains one of the defining homologation specials of the air-cooled era, created to give Porsche a competitive foundation for international GT racing while retaining enough road-going usability to attract customers. This particularly early example, offered through Broad Arrow Private Sales, is chassis number 9113600312, placing it among the first 500 Carrera RS examples produced. It was originally completed as an M472 Touring specification and retains its matching-numbers engine and transmission.
Porsche developed the Carrera RS around the 911 S, substantially revising its mechanical package for greater performance. The 2,687cc air-cooled flat-six uses Bosch mechanical fuel injection and Nikasil-coated cylinder surfaces, producing approximately 210 horsepower at 6,300 rpm. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, while revised suspension, larger brakes, wider wheels and tires, and the distinctive “ducktail” rear spoiler transformed the 911’s high-speed capability. The Touring specification retained substantially more interior equipment than the stripped M471 Sport, providing a more practical interpretation of the RS concept without abandoning its performance-focused engineering.
The importance of this particular car extends beyond its early chassis position. It retains its original body and chassis numbers, engine, and transmission, while its documented ownership history traces through Germany. The car underwent a comprehensive restoration guided by specialist Roitmayer, completed in 2016. Its unibody was refinished in its originally specified Light Yellow, with individual mechanical, electrical, suspension, wheel, gauge, and interior components disassembled and restored before reassembly. A number of new-old-stock components were also sourced during the process.
Porsche ultimately produced 1,580 Carrera RS 2.7 examples, including 1,308 Touring cars and approximately 200 Sport versions. The RS’s combination of motorsport-derived engineering, limited production, and instantly recognizable styling has made it a landmark in Porsche history.
With its early first-series chassis, matching numbers, original color specification, documented German provenance, and photo-documented restoration, this 1973 911 Carrera RS Touring represents a particularly significant example of Porsche’s landmark road-going competition program.
