FOR SALE: 1996 Porsche 911 Gunther Werks 400R Sport Touring #1

The first of just 25 Sport Touring examples created by Gunther Werks

Now offered for sale on Bring a Trailer, this 1996 Porsche 911 Remastered by Gunther Werks represents the first of just 25 Sport Touring examples created by the California-based specialist. Known as the “Chelsea Grey Commission,” the car debuted at the 2018 edition of The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, and showcases Gunther Werks’ vision of what Porsche’s air-cooled 993 might have become had production continued beyond 1998.

The transformation begins with extensive carbon-fiber engineering. Gunther Werks replaces numerous exterior panels and structural components with lightweight composites, while approximately 80 percent of the cabin is bespoke. Beneath the dramatic bodywork is a heavily reworked chassis featuring JRZ adjustable coilovers with remote reservoirs, custom rear control arms, upgraded anti-roll bars, lightweight uprights, a front strut brace, and a hydraulic front-axle lift system.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated, air-cooled 4.0-liter flat-six developed from the original 3.6-liter engine by Rothsport Road and Race. Forged internals, individual throttle bodies, custom induction, and MoTeC engine management help deliver a reported output exceeding 400 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, enabling 0-to-60-mph acceleration in less than four seconds. Power is transmitted through a strengthened Getrag G50 six-speed manual transaxle equipped with upgraded internals, a lightweight flywheel, and a clutch sourced from the 997.2 GT3 RS.

The Sport Touring specification adds a distinctly understated motorsport character through a Carrera RS-inspired decklid spoiler, Fuchs-style forged wheels, and a unique intake plenum. Finished in elegant Chelsea Grey, the widened bodywork is complemented by red Porsche graphics, black Bi-LED headlights, a custom LED rear light bridge, and satin-black detailing. Carbon-ceramic brakes with black Brembo calipers further reinforce its performance credentials.

Inside, exposed matte carbon fiber dominates the dashboard, doors, sport seats, steering wheel, transmission tunnel, and rear-seat-delete panel. Red leather accents contrast with Alcantara trim, while billet-machined controls and a bespoke steering wheel add further craftsmanship. In September 2022, the car returned to Gunther Werks for more than $22,500 in mechanical and cosmetic upgrades, including a matte-carbon chin spoiler, revised rear suspension, and bronze refinishing for its forged wheels.

With all 25 Remastered Sport Touring coupes now completed, the Chelsea Grey Commission stands as a particularly significant example. Combining air-cooled Porsche heritage with modern composite construction, advanced chassis engineering, and bespoke craftsmanship, it offers a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most ambitious interpretations of the 993 ever produced.
