The unsung hero of the range, the standard 911, was also the mainstay of the Porsche line-up during the troubled 1970s. It wasn’t long after the 1973 oil crisis, that infamous moment when OPEC decided to push the price of oil through the roof, that sports car sales began to plummet. Overnight, the name of the game among sports car manufacturers shifted from ‘performance’ to ‘fuel efficiency’. In addition to the catastrophic oil price predicament and the potential threat of global nuclear war, Richard Nixon resigned as President of America in 1974 following the Watergate scandal, just as the Vietnam War was drawing to a close.

To put things into context, 1973 was just four short years after the Woodstock phenomenon had rocked the world. One of the top hits in the 1973 year-end charts was Elton John’s Crocodile Rock, while that same year, Carly Simon made it into the top ten with her song You’re So Vain.
