Celebrating six decades of the Porsche 911 Targa, Porsche Post editor Adam Towler from Porsche Club GB on YouTube takes the wheel of every generation, driving them back-to-back—from the simple and charming “soft-window” Targa of the 1960s to the high-tech 992 with its fully retractable roof.

At this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, Porsche marked that same legacy, tracing the Targa’s development from its 1967 debut to today’s hybrid-assisted 992.2 Carrera GTS. The first Targa, with its removable plastic rear window and 130-hp 2.0-liter flat-six, embodied pure simplicity and connection.

By the mid-1970s, the Carrera 3.0 Targa gained refinement and power, while the 964 and 993 generations brought modern engineering and new roof designs. The 996 and 997 carried the concept into the water-cooled era before the 991 revived the signature roll hoop in 2014.

Today’s 992.2 GTS Targa combines classic design cues with electrified performance—proof that, 60 years later, the Targa remains a perfect blend of style, innovation, and the unmistakable Porsche driving experience. This experience shows how the Targa has evolved in performance, design, and character while preserving the essence of open-air 911 driving.
