A One-Off Porsche 959 ‘Speedster’ is Heading to Auction

The only Porsche 959 convertible in the world

Porsche’s Type 959 was its first true supercar, a technological marvel that redefined performance when it debuted. Its development stemmed from Porsche’s Group B rally ambitions, requiring a road-legal production run of 200 units. The result was a car featuring a lightweight body made of aluminum, Kevlar, and composites, a 2.85-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine producing 450 horsepower, and full-time all-wheel drive with height-adjustable suspension.

Debuting at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show, it went into limited production in 1987 with just 288 built. Despite high demand, Porsche lost money on each unit but proved its advanced AWD technology, which later appeared in the 964 Carrera 4. Initially banned in the U.S., import laws eventually changed in 1999, allowing the 959 to be legally enjoyed stateside.

Originally built in Stuttgart and completed on 6 November 1987, this Porsche 959 ‘Komfort’ featured a Silver Metallic exterior and a two-tone Cashmere Beige and Black leather interior. It is believed to have been delivered new to Jürgen Lässig, a professional racing driver known for winning the 1995 24 Hours of Daytona and finishing second at Le Mans in 1987.

After an autobahn accident, it was acquired by Porsche specialist Karl-Heinz Feustel, who transformed the car into a one-of-a-kind 959 ‘Speedster’. The car featured Grand Prix White paint and a blue leather interior, including an electric soft-top and a removable hardtop. It was displayed at the 1989 Frankfurt and Essen Motor Shows, with an asking price of around $1.2 million.

Eventually sold to Dr. Berg Klaus in 1990, the car remained active into the 2000s before being acquired by its current owner in 2008. The unique 959 ‘Speedster’ remains in excellent condition and is offered with a hardtop, Speedster windscreen, spare mirrors, and original documentation. This extraordinary one-of-one 1987 Porsche 959 ‘Speedster’ will be offered by RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated value of $1,250,000 to $1,700,000 USD—a truly rare opportunity for discerning collectors.
