Set to cross the block at Mecum Auctions’ Monterey Auction on August 15, this remarkable 1995 Porsche 911 Speedster by Gunther Werks, known as “Blue Phoenix,” represents one of the most exclusive reinterpretations of Porsche’s final air-cooled 911 generation. Limited to just 25 remastered Speedster conversions, the example offered has traveled only 120 miles since completion, making it an exceptionally fresh showcase of Gunther Werks’ engineering and craftsmanship.
Built around the legendary 993-generation Porsche 911, the car underwent a comprehensive transformation that extended far beyond cosmetic enhancements. It was completely disassembled and rebuilt with lightweight carbon-fiber bodywork, a re-engineered suspension system, and a bespoke interior designed to blend motorsport functionality with handcrafted luxury. The Huntington Beach-based specialist has earned a global reputation for elevating classic air-cooled 911s into modern high-performance machines, a philosophy reinforced when one of its builds recorded a 1:30.99 lap at Laguna Seca in the hands of professional driver Randy Pobst—matching the pace of contemporary hypercars.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engineered by Rothsport Racing in Oregon. The extensively upgraded engine features a custom crankshaft, connecting rods, cylinder barrels, Mahle pistons, individual throttle bodies, coil-over-plug ignition, and a twin-map MoTeC engine management system. Producing 430 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque, the engine revs to 7,800 rpm and channels its output through a bespoke Getrag G50 six-speed manual transmission paired with a 40% locking mechanical limited-slip differential equipped with carbon clutches.
The chassis has been equally refined with JRZ RS Pro remote-reservoir coilovers, Brembo four-wheel disc brakes featuring red calipers and slotted rotors, and lightweight forged three-piece aluminum wheels. A front axle lift system further enhances everyday usability without compromising the car’s performance-focused character.
Inside, the Speedster combines premium craftsmanship with purposeful design. Carbon-fiber bucket seats, a carbon dashboard, illuminated “Blue Phoenix” sill plates, a leather-wrapped carbon steering wheel with an orange center marker, RS-style door pulls, and a Porsche Classic Apple CarPlay infotainment system create an environment that feels both contemporary and authentic. Additional highlights include an integrated roll hoop beneath the rear tonneau, custom storage compartments with fitted luggage, and forged aluminum Bi-LED projector headlights with active daytime running lights.
Recently serviced and inspected by Gunther Werks, including the installation of a new battery, this exceptionally rare Speedster stands as one of the finest modern reinterpretations of Porsche’s iconic air-cooled 911 lineage, blending collectible exclusivity with world-class engineering.
