A rare Works-spec Porsche 996 GT3 RSR takes to the track at the Red Bull Ring. Developed from the early 996 GT racers that first won their class at Le Mans in 1999, this final 2004 RSR evolution features a 3.8-liter flat-six producing nearly 500 horsepower, a sequential gearbox with auto-blip downshifts, and a lightweight carbon-composite body. Weighing around 1,150 kg, it combines strong braking from Brembo steel discs with immense grip from racing slicks.
On track, the sequential gearbox allows the driver to focus on braking and corner entry without heel-and-toe inputs. The car feels remarkably stable under heavy trail braking, with a planted rear end that inspires confidence despite the rear-engine layout. Precise brake modulation unlocks sharp turn-in and impressive cornering grip.
The 996 GT3 RSR reveals a dual character: approachable for amateurs at moderate pace, yet highly rewarding when pushed to the limit—making it a thrilling and competitive endurance racer even decades after its debut.
