RM Sotheby’s to Offer Ultra-Rare 964 Turbo S Lightweight

One of just 86 built

Introduced as a prototype at the 1992 Geneva Auto Show, the limited-edition Porsche 964 Turbo S Leichtbau (Lightweight) was the creation of Porsche test driver and engineer Roland Kussamaulat, who applied lessons learned from the IMSA Supercar Championship. Like the contemporary Carrera RS, it employs an extensive lightweight construction that reduces weight by 419 lbs compared to a standard 911 Turbo. Further enhancements include larger brakes, upgraded suspension, and a revised 3.3-liter turbocharged flat-six engine generating 380 HP.

Distinguishing itself from the standard 964 Turbo, the Turbo S incorporates weight-saving elements such as a carbon fiber-reinforced composite rear decklid and luggage compartment cover. Its exterior is marked by front brake cooling ducts replacing the fog lights, air intake scoops on the rear quarter panels, a distinctive one-piece body-colored “whale tail” spoiler, thin-gauge glass, red brake calipers, and exclusive 18-inch three-piece Speedline wheels.

This Midnight Blue Metallic Turbo S Lightweight is one of just 86 built and will cross the block at RM Sotheby’s next month with an estimate up to $2.75 million. Originally delivered to a well-connected Porsche Exclusive client, it features a Bordeaux leather interior, Amethyst Metallic wheel centers, and gold brake calipers. Nearly every interior surface is trimmed in Bordeaux or dark blue leather, including the optional Matter roll cage, sport steering wheel, steering column, center console, gauge bezels, air vents, switchgear, and turn-signal stalks.

Commissioned as part of a small run of 964s built to the original owner’s exact specifications by Porsche Exclusive, these cars share distinctive Amethyst wheel centers and lavish leather interiors. Today, they rank among the most sought-after 964s for their rarity and bespoke detailing.

The original owner retained the car in a private collection for years before it was imported to the U.S. in 2009. It has been part of the Todd Blue Lapis Collection since 2018, acquired with just 95 kilometers recorded. Lightly used since, it has appeared at select Southern California events and now shows only 633 kilometers (393 miles). The car remains in outstanding condition, consistent with its minimal mileage and careful stewardship.
