Marketplace: 1989 Porsche 911 Classic Turbo Reimagined by Singer

Founded in California in 2009 by former musician and Porsche enthusiast Rob Dickinson, Singer Vehicle Design established itself as one of the world’s foremost creators of reimagined Porsche 911s. Rather than restoring cars to original factory specification, Singer developed a philosophy of “restored, reimagined, reborn,” combining the timeless design of the air-cooled 911 with contemporary engineering, materials, and craftsmanship.

Beginning with naturally aspirated commissions based on the Type 964-generation Porsche 911, Singer’s work quickly earned international acclaim for its obsessive attention to detail, extensive use of carbon fiber bodywork, and highly individualized approach to each commission.

In 2022, Singer unveiled the Porsche 911 Classic Turbo, a restoration and personalization program inspired by the Type 930 Turbo. Developed in collaboration with owners, it sought to reimagine the iconic Porsche model for the modern era. Singer founder Rob Dickinson described the result as an effort to capture the “awesome thrill” of the original car while further developing its performance and refinement, calling it “a fitting tribute to a car that changed my life and many others.”

Each commission began with a Porsche 964 donor chassis that was stripped, reinforced, and reengineered before receiving lightweight carbon fiber bodywork, bespoke interior appointments, and a host of modern performance upgrades.

Power came from a twin-turbocharged, air-cooled 3.8-liter flat-six developed in collaboration with UK-based Williams Advanced Engineering. Featuring four-valve cylinder heads, electronic fuel injection, air-to-water intercooling, titanium components, and electronically controlled wastegates, the engine was initially offered in 450 hp form before later becoming available in specifications up to 510 hp. The impressive power unit was paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transaxle and limited-slip differential that delivered power to the rear wheels.

Powerful brakes, traction control, and adjustable suspension endowed the Classic Turbo with performance far beyond that of the original Type 930, while curb weight remained below 2,900 lbs., depending on specification. Rather than recreating the abrupt power delivery for which early turbocharged 911s became famous, Singer sought to build the air-cooled Turbo that Porsche might have created had development continued into the modern era, combining immense performance with tractable road manners, progressive boost response, and exceptional driver engagement.

Reviewing an example in October 2024, Richard Meaden of Evo magazine praised the Classic Turbo’s blend of performance and authenticity, concluding: “It’s hard not to fall for a manual, rear-drive, air-cooled, 500-plus bhp Porsche 911, yet it’s the integrity, completeness and authenticity of the overall transformation that leaves the most lasting impression.”

Completed by Singer Vehicle Design in 2024, this stunning example was created from a 1989 Porsche 964 Carrera 4 donor chassis and specified in a particularly distinctive configuration. Finished in NATO Green over Blonde leather with green houndstooth seat inserts, this commission, dubbed “Deephaven,” combined the visual drama of Singer’s turbocharged flagship with a richly appointed interior that featured natural walnut trim, floating gauges, anodized aluminum Regency Gold trim, and a $14,750 premium audio system.

Exterior details included 24-carat gold Singer deck lid badging, and RSR-style wheels with a NATO Green background. The Singer also was optioned with the 503 hp specification engine, $26,950 carbon ceramic brakes with Brembo calipers, a front-axle lift system, and a custom-designed doorsill script.

In the hands of its first and only owner, a noted enthusiast whose collection includes some of the most significant classic and modern sports cars, the Classic Turbo participated in the 2025 McLaren F1 Owners Club Tour through North Carolina and Tennessee. In December 2025, it returned to Singer Vehicle Design for service and minor refinishing.
