One-of-a-Kind Porsche 718 Spyder RS Panamericana Special Up for Auction

A one-off creation honoring Porsche’s landmark achievement at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana in Mexico

RM Sotheby’s is offering the Porsche 718 Spyder RS Panamericana Special, a one-off creation honoring Porsche’s landmark achievement at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana in Mexico. That year, Hans Herrmann drove the 550 Spyder to third place overall and first in the Sport category for cars under 1500 cc. This result, considered Porsche’s greatest success across its three participations since 1952, helped establish the brand’s motorsport reputation and ultimately inspired the “Carrera” name.

The Panamericana Special is based on the 718 Spyder RS and recalls the lightweight mid-engine 550 Spyder, Porsche’s first purpose-built race car that competed successfully against larger rivals. The project was developed by Porsche Latin America in collaboration with Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur in Germany. It completes a trilogy of Sonderwunsch models commemorating Porsche’s three appearances in the Carrera Panamericana over seventy years.

The car is finished in Paint to Sample Centenaire Silver, with 20-inch forged magnesium 718 Cayman GT4 RS wheels in Satin Aluminum. The wheels feature TAG Heuer crests on the center locks, while TAG Heuer and Porsche logos appear on the Centenaire Silver-painted bonnet. Roundels in Signal Yellow with the number 55, a nod to Herrmann’s 550 Spyder, appear on the doors and rear.

Inside, “La Carrera Panamericana” is stitched into the headrests, with Carmine Red stitching on the seats and steering wheel. Bespoke features include a lasered passenger-side cup holder panel reading “Spyder RS Panamericana Special,” illuminated door sills with a 550 Spyder outline in Mexican flag colors, key panels with flag details, and a TAG Heuer logo embossed on the armrest. Additional equipment includes the Weissach package, BOSE Surround Sound, full bucket seats, front axle lift, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, and the Chrono package.
