Marketplace: Documented 1970 Porsche 911 ST

Ultra-rare lightweight 911 now available

Background

The 911ST was offered from 1970 to 1972 in a factory race or rally specification 911. If you wanted a factory-built 911 race car from Porsche during this time, this is what you ordered. Only 23 of these lightweight Porsche’s were purportedly built. The cars were based off a 911S with significant changes to lower the weight and reinforce the shell for the rigors of racing. Engines ranged from 2.2 liters to 2.3, both single and dual plug.

Factory ST features

Highlights of the conversion of a 911S to an ST are the use of thinner sheet metal for the roof and other body panels. Numerous moldings and decorative items were deleted, including the glove box, sun visor on the passenger side, torsion bar covers, fog light recess covers, and door and decorative moldings. A larger fuel tank was fitted as was a transverse bar between the front struts to stiffen the car. Jack points were also reinforced along with rear strut mounts and engine mounts. Sitting in the heavily bolstered race seats, you would also notice a 10,000-rpm tachometer.

Chassis 9110301383

This ST was manufactured in 1970 and has been researched to verify the stampings and authenticity. It was built to rally specifications. It retains its rebuilt numbers-matching 2.2-liter engine and a rebuilt 901 gearbox with limited slip. It is one of only two ST’s painted silver metallic by the factory.

Delivered new to Germany, little is known of any competition history. It was road registered in Germany and believed to have been run in some smaller local and club events. The car was restored several years ago, but has been restored again recently. All the correct hallmarks of an ST are present, and the car retains its original aluminum VIN plate on the front latch panel. The car is now ready to be driven, shown, or even vintage raced, etc.

Price $875,000.
