Championship-Winning 1994 Porsche 911 RSR 3.8 for Auction

One of only 51 examples produced

Built expressly for privateers competing on the international GT stage, the Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 represents the ultimate evolution of the Type 964 platform. Introduced in 1989, the 964 marked a significant leap for the 911, with extensive mechanical revisions, a new 3.6-litre flat-six, power steering, ABS, and a thoroughly reworked chassis. Drawing on lessons learned from the pioneering 959, Porsche refined the breed further with the lightweight Carrera RS and, ultimately, the fearsome RS 3.8 and RSR competition variants.

Clothed in a widened Turbo-style body and powered by the M64/04 3.8-litre engine producing up to 300 bhp in factory form, the RSR was the most focused and capable 964 ever built. Fewer than 55 RS 3.8 road cars were produced, with just 51 examples of the full RSR constructed, placing it among the most coveted air-cooled racing 911s.

The example you see here, chassis 496081, is widely regarded as the most successful RSR of the 1994 season. Delivered new through Porsche’s Special Vehicle Department to American privateer Mark Sandridge, it was campaigned with extraordinary success under the Team Salad banner. Highlights include a class podium and fourth overall at the 24 Hours of Daytona, class victories at Sebring and Watkins Glen, and the 1994 IMSA GT2 Championship.

Subsequently developed further by Porsche Motorsports North America and later owned by noted UK enthusiast Neil Primrose, this RSR remains superbly preserved in its iconic 1994 livery. Accompanied by extensive documentation, race history, and select spares, this championship-winning Porsche RSR 3.8 is set to hit the auction block on February through RM Sotheby’s carrying an estimate of up to  $1 million.
