Behind the Wheel of the 991 Speedster

The Speedster badge has long signified something special from Porsche. First seen in 1954, it’s traditionally been applied to some of the brand’s most stylish and racy road cars. The 2019 911 Speedster, based on the 991.2 generation, is perhaps the most serious iteration yet. Limited to just 1,948 units—a nod to Porsche’s founding year—it’s a rare machine with a genuine motorsport pedigree.

Unlike earlier Speedsters that leaned more on appearance, this one means business. Porsche’s GT department handled development, making it the first open-top GT car from the factory. Under the skin, it shares its DNA with the 911 GT3, including the glorious 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six producing 502 horsepower, paired exclusively with a 6-speed GT Sport manual gearbox. No PDK here—this car is about the purest possible driving experience.
