JayEmm on Cars on YouTube dives into the Porsche 928, the model Porsche once seriously considered as a replacement for the 911. Introduced in 1977, the 928 was conceived as a forward-looking, front-engined V8 grand tourer aimed at expanding Porsche’s appeal—particularly in the U.S.
Unlike the 911s of the period, the 928 offered real-world practicality. Its 2+2 seating and hatchback body made it genuinely usable day to day. Over time, the design evolved from the sharp, angular early look to the cleaner, more unified S4-era styling, with enthusiasts still divided on which version looks best.
The car featured in the video is a 1983 928 S, marking the first meaningful performance upgrade over the original model. Early 928s used a 4.5-liter V8 producing 240 horsepower, a figure shaped more by late-1970s emissions and efficiency pressures than by Porsche’s performance goals.
By the early 1980s, Porsche acknowledged that flagship buyers expected muscle to match the image. The 928 S answered with a 4.7-liter V8 producing 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, thanks to a higher 10:1 compression ratio and a chassis finally tuned to deliver on the car’s grand touring promise.
