In its push for overall Le Mans victories, Porsche drifted away from its belief that race cars should closely mirror road models. After the dominant 917 wins in 1970 and 1971, the brand returned to its roots by developing competition cars based on the 911. The naturally aspirated Carrera RSR came first, followed in 1976 by Group 4 and Group 5 racers derived from the turbocharged 911 Turbo, or 930. Chief among them was the factory-backed Group 5 935, created for a championship focused on that category.
Despite early regulatory setbacks, the 935 recovered to secure the championship. Continued development led to the twin-turbo 935/77, increasing power and dominance. In just two seasons, the 935 achieved class wins, an overall victory, and two world titles, launching a legendary racing legacy that thrived with both factory teams and privateers worldwide.
In a video from NM2255 | Raw Car Sounds on YouTube, viewers are treated to onboard footage of the 1977 Porsche 935/77 Group 5 racer. The car is propelled by a 2.85-liter twin-turbo flat-six producing around 630 hp, complemented by titanium coil-spring suspension and brakes derived from the Porsche 917.
