SpeedSport Tuning Expands HQ and Racing Services

Behind the scenes with owner Bryan Lagas

Three decades and counting

Over the past 30 years, SpeedSport Tuning has transformed from a small Porsche “neighborhood garage” to a highly respected company serving street, competition, and vintage enthusiasts. With current gross sales exceeding $7M annually, their attention to detail and customer service continues to be a recipe for success.

Through the years…

Initially owned by Larry Prentiss in Norwalk, Connecticut, the shop had a solid reputation and eventually hired Porsche mechanic Spencer Cox. Spencer later purchased the business,  embracing local enthusiasts and the growing Porsche Club Racing scene. With steady growth, the business outgrew its location and moved to Danbury in 2005 and then to its current 32,000 square foot location in 2010.

Bryan Lagas: Owner

Due to health issues, Spencer sold the business in 2019 to his General Manager, Bryan Lagas, whose previous auto-repair experience qualified him as the perfect fit for SST’s next chapter. As Bryan explained to Stuttcars, his years in the automobile repair business have taught him that it’s not enough to do great work. The customer has to be treated with respect to form a lasting relationship. “Eclectic, eccentric, Type-A; I’ve seen all types of Porsche owners,” states Bryan. Obviously, it’s no small feat to keep everyone happy.

On Track

In 2024, SpeedSport Tuning’s racing business grew with numerous customers racing Porsche Caymans at PCA events. The big news, though, was providing track support at two Porsche Sprint Challenge North America Series events: Watkins Glen, N.Y., and Road America in Wisconsin. That momentum carried into 2025 with the support of racing clients in both GT3 Cup and Cayman classes. As owner Bryan Lagas explained, “We’re now supporting about 25 racers at various events throughout the season.” More racers translate to more transportation needs, and Bryan and his crew support that with two 18-wheelers and a variety of smaller rigs.

Vintage Porsches

In addition to servicing modern Porsches, Speed Sport Tuning has continued their tradition of serving the air-cooled Porsche community that the company was initially founded on. While most of their vintage air-cooled service is performed on the popular 911, numerous customers have Speedsport Tuning maintain their 356, Porsche’s first sports car. While the common 4-cylinder push-rod engine isn’t too complicated, SpeedSport Tuning also has the expertise to service and rebuild the racing-oriented 4-cam Carrera engine, designed by Porsche for racing. Only a handful of technicians worldwide are qualified to build these engines, and SpeedSport Tuning has one of these sought-after mechanics on staff.

Diversification

While SpeedSport’s reputation in the Porsche world continued to grow, their clients often asked the shop to handle their non-Porsche vehicles too. In response, “SST Auto” was formed as a sister company to specialize in non-Porsche European cars (e.g., Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, VW, Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini, Land Rover, Maserati, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Lotus). As if that’s not enough to keep up with, SST Auto can also service Teslas.

Looking Ahead

With excitement in his voice, Bryan explained that they are now developing a bigger 11-acre property that will serve as their new home in the near future. With approximately 275 vehicle spaces, let’s hope this new facility will foster continued growth and a spacious environment for Bryan and his crew to continue serving the needs of their large clientele.
