Marketplace: “StarPower” 911 Turbo?

Ex–Walter Payton 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo comes to market

There’s no shortage of examples of Porsche 911s owned by film and sports starts. Steve McQueen and Michael Jordan are just a few who come to mind. This 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo was purchased new by NFL Hall of Famer Walter Payton and now shows 89k miles following history in Illinois, Florida, and New Jersey. The Black-over-Black coupe is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.6L flat-six that drives all four wheels through a six-speed manual transaxle with a limited-slip differential.

Past work involved resealing the engine and transaxle in 2014, and the turbochargers were rebuilt in April 2018. Equipment includes the Digital Sound Package, a fixed rear spoiler, 18″ Turbo Twist wheels, and power-adjustable front seats. The current owner acquired the car in 2022 and has since added approximately 400 miles. This 993 Turbo is now offered in New Jersey on dealer consignment with a copy of the original title in Walter Payton’s name, a Porsche Production Specifications sheet, a window sticker, service records, and a clean Montana title.

The 993 Turbo featured wider bodywork, revised bumper covers, and a fixed rear spoiler to accommodate top-mount intercoolers when compared with the standard 993 coupe. This example is finished in Black (041) and features a sunroof, integrated fog lights, and polished exhaust outlets. The Carfax report notes that the rear of the car sustained “minor damage” in June 2020, which the selling dealer attributes to when a valet backed into another car, and the rear bumper cover was repainted to address the damage.

The 18″ Turbo Twist wheels are mounted with Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The car features an Automatic Brake Differential (ABD), and the 993 was the first 911 to feature multi-link rear suspension. Braking is provided by red Porsche-branded four-piston calipers over cross-drilled rotors. The power steering reservoir was replaced in 2014, and the front brakes were serviced in 2017.

The power-adjustable front seats are trimmed in Black leather that extends to the dashboard, center console, and door panels. Amenities include the Digital Sound Package, cruise control, a CDR-210 stereo, and Turbo-branded metal door sill guards. The blower regulator and blower motor resistor were replaced in 2014 and 2018, respectively.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a central tachometer, a 200-mph speedometer, an analog quartz clock, and gauges for oil pressure, oil temperature, oil level, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 89k miles, with approximately 400 miles added under current ownership.

The twin-turbocharged 3.6L flat-six was factory-equipped with Bosch Motronic fuel injection and rated at 400 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft of torque when new. The engine was resealed, and the cylinder heads were repaired in 2014 by Naples Porsche in Florida. Work in 2018 totaled over $9k and involved rebuilding the turbochargers, resurfacing the timing chain housings, and replacing the timing chain housing seals, gaskets, tensioner rails, guide rails, distributor cap and rotor, hood insulation pad, and more. The oil was changed, and the air filter was replaced in preparation for the sale.

Power is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed manual transaxle with a limited-slip differential, and the transaxle was also resealed in 2014. The clutch was overhauled in 2012, at which time the hydraulic cylinder and pressure accumulator were replaced, and a clutch line was changed in 2014. A replacement shift rod and linkage coupling were fitted in April 2018.

A copy of the original title in Walter Payton’s name, a window sticker, a Porsche Production Specifications sheet, and service records are included in the sale.
