Most Porsche enthusiasts have come across finely crafted 911 backdates over the years. The movement started in the early 1990s, when builders began transforming affordable F- and early G-Series cars to resemble later 930 Turbos or even 964 models.
A new chapter emerged in 2009 when Singer, based in Los Angeles, introduced its vision of a reimagined air-cooled 911 using the 964 as a foundation. In 2017, Gunther Werks joined the scene, also from L.A., focusing on 993-based builds in pursuit of the ultimate modernized air-cooled 911. Outside California, Germany’s Kaege Retro has been producing its own 993-based reinterpretations since 2010, earning comparisons to Singer for its craftsmanship and attention to detail.
One standout Kaege Retro build is currently listed on Bring a Trailer, showing just 3,000 miles. Finished in silver, it rides on 17-inch multi-piece wheels inspired by Fuchs designs, with polished lips, black centers, and branded caps. The car features upgraded KW sport suspension and enhanced braking via cross-drilled rotors with Kaege-branded calipers.
Inside, the cabin blends vintage style with modern comfort, featuring Recaro Sportster CS seats upholstered in red leather with red-and-black houndstooth inserts. Matching materials extend throughout the interior, complemented by a leather-wrapped steering wheel, retro-themed dashboard with silver accents, air conditioning, power windows, cruise control, a Porsche Classic infotainment system, German Maestro speakers, and aluminum pedals.
Under the rear decklid, the air-cooled flat-six has been enlarged to 3.8 liters and upgraded with hydraulic lifters, a stainless-steel exhaust, and carbon-fiber intake components. Output is rated at 300 horsepower, delivered to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential.
