This 1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 is a stunning example finished in a rare shade of Karminrot (009), also known as Magenta, with black Carrera 3.0 script down the side. Produced April 14, 1976, this Carrera 3.0 features the 930-style wide rear fenders, and factory build sheets show that it also came from the factory with 930-specification wheels for that true widebody look. The car has undergone a complete glass-out restoration in Germany in 2023, where the car was stripped to bare metal and shows no welds or grafting on the fenders, determining that this wide bodywork is, in fact, original. This is important as it was before Porsche officially offered the “WTL” Turbo Look package officially for naturally aspirated cars, and proving that it is from the factory makes it all the more significant. Restoration also included all new lines rubber, cables, electronics, and a custom stainless steel exhaust system. The mileage on chassis was 80,000 km prior to restoration, sitting for 15 years as part of a larger collection.
The interior of the Carrera was also entirely restored, but not to factory specifications. Originally, the car came with black vinyl and standard seats, but what is there now is far more exciting. Upholstered in tribute to the 959 Komfort and 964 Carrera RS, the later Carrera sport seats are now wrapped in black leather on the outside, with seat centers upholstered in three color blocks- starting with a deep magenta, followed by a lighter rose color, with two white panels meeting at the rear of the cushion and bottom of the backrest. This interior is absolutely stunning and complimented by matching door cards and an Alcantara-wrapped 3-spoke 964 Turbo S steering wheel. The dash-top is also leather-wrapped, while the dash itself remains standard with five large gauges laid out in front of you, including a 250 km/h speedometer and an 8,000 RPM tachometer with a 6,500 rpm redline.
Powering the Carrera 3.0 is essentially a naturally aspirated version of the 930 Turbo’s flat-6. As the car’s name implies, this means 3.0 liters of displacement paired with a Bosch K-Jetronic CIS system. Unlike some of the earlier high-performance 911 engines of the era, the engine and gearbox casing were made of aluminum rather than magnesium, significantly improving reliability. Power is rated at 197 hp; although this is 10 horsepower less than the outgoing Carrera, performance remained almost identical thanks to improved low-down torque. This car is equipped from the factory with a 5-speed 915 gearbox. Both the engine and gearbox have been recently overhauled using original Porsche parts and are in excellent running and driving condition.
The Carrera 3.0 was only produced in 1976 and 1977, and during that time, just 2,566 coupes were produced. Never offered in the United States, this car was very significant in the 911 lineage and bridged the gap between the thinly veiled homologation cars like the 2.7 RS and the incoming 911 SC of 1978. Offered in a stunning color combination and truly unique factory bodywork, this Carrera 3.0 is a car that should not be missed.
