A new book documenting the complete history of the Porsche 964 Carrera RS and its Carrera Cup counterpart is now available. Written by Christoph Mäder and self-published through Mäder Morse Field Recordings, 964 Carrera RS covers the model’s origins, development, production and competition history across 442 pages.
Drawing on factory records, technical documents, period photography and more than 100 hours of interviews, Mäder has set out to produce a definitive account of Porsche’s lightweight 964. The book examines not only how the Carrera RS was conceived and engineered, but also the people, decisions and racing program that shaped it.

The story begins with the development of the 964 itself, at a time when Porsche was under considerable financial pressure. Mäder details the engineering and marketing decisions behind the new generation of 911 before tracing the creation of the Carrera Cup in 1990, the one-make championship from which the Carrera RS emerged.
The level of research extends well beyond headline specifications. Changes to individual brackets and captive nuts are documented, along with additional welding, component revisions and the reasoning behind them. From there, Mäder works through the wider RS family, including the Touring, Clubsport, RS/RSR 3.8, Carrera Cup USA and RS America. The latter two are carefully identified as closely related models rather than true Carrera RS derivatives. Lesser-known versions are also covered, including the 20 cars built for a planned series in Macau.
Almost four years in the making, 964 Carrera RS draws on interviews with more than 40 people connected with the car and the Carrera Cup program. Jost Capito contributes the foreword, while former managers, designers, engineers, Porsche factory personnel, team principals and racing drivers provide first-hand accounts of the car’s development, production and competition history.
Mäder also gained access to factory-issued Certificates of Authenticity, build sheets, technical bulletins, parts catalogues and a large collection of previously unpublished photographs taken inside Werk 2 at Zuffenhausen. The material allows the book to document production changes, individual chassis specifications and even component part numbers in considerable detail.

“I aimed not only to document the 964 Carrera RS accurately, but to create a book that reflects the car’s character and significance through its physical form,” says Mäder. “From the research and interviews to the production quality and colour choices, every element of the book celebrates the spirit of the Carrera RS.”
That attention extends to the book itself. Mäder, whose design work includes race-car liveries such as the JetAlliance Aston Martin DBR9, oversaw both its layout and production. It is his first self-published and self-funded title, following previous collaborations on books covering the Carrera RS 2.7, 911 R and 993 GT2.
