Marketplace: Singer Targa “Highlander” Commission

Paint to sample 911 heads to Mecum's Monterey auction

Singer Group, Inc. has built its reputation on what it calls a “Relentless Pursuit of Excellence,” transforming Porsche 911s into highly individualized interpretations commissioned by some of the world’s most discerning collectors. Based on the 964-generation Porsche 911 produced from 1989 to 1994, each car is restored and reimagined according to its owner’s specifications.

Known as the “Highlander Commission,” this 1992 Porsche 911 Targa by Singer is a striking example of that philosophy. Carrying a revision date of March 15, 2024, the car shows just 416 miles on its odometer at the time of writing.

Bespoke Paint

The exterior is finished in paint-to-sample Ferrari Nero Stellato, or Starry Black, lending the Targa an understated yet dramatic presence. Inside, black leather upholstery is accented by bespoke cross-weave detailing and Piano Black surfaces, creating a cabin that blends the familiar character of the classic 911 with Singer’s meticulous approach to materials and craftsmanship.

3.8 Muscle

Power comes from an air-cooled 3.8-liter flat-six engine, numbered 62N01924, built by renowned racing engine specialist Ed Pink. The engine features a nickel-plated intake plenum and is managed by an Emtron ECU. Power is sent through a five-speed manual gearbox and limited-slip differential, while cross-drilled Brembo disc brakes provide the stopping power.

More details

Lightweight carbon-fiber body panels are complemented by an array of carefully considered details. The Highlander Commission features a safety-type fuel cell with an external filler cap, a removable black canvas Targa roof and a retractable rear spoiler incorporating a tinted acrylic screen beneath the grille. Nickel-plated rear bumperettes, bullet-style mirrors and exterior trim provide subtle contrast, while 24-karat gold Singer script badging adds an unmistakably bespoke finishing touch.

Cockpit

The interior is similarly purposeful. Four-way adjustable Recaro seats are joined by air conditioning, power windows, a Momo Prototipo steering wheel and lightweight drilled footboards and pedals. A Porsche Classic radio with navigation brings modern functionality to the otherwise classically inspired cockpit.

Bi-Xenon headlights with polycarbonate front lenses provide illumination, while staggered-width 17-inch Fuchs-style wheels finished in Champagne Nickel are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S high-performance tires.

With its combination of classic 964-generation proportions, modern performance and highly personalized detailing, the Highlander Commission captures the essence of Singer’s approach to the Porsche 911. It is at once a celebration of the model’s enduring heritage and a thoroughly bespoke interpretation of one of the world’s most recognizable sports cars.
