Porsche 992 “Sally” to make Air|Water Appearance

Cars (2006 film) inspired build just one of many attractions featured

The Porsche 911 Sally Special draws inspiration from Sally Carrera, the beloved animated character from Cars (2006 film)—herself modeled after a real Porsche 911. Side by side, you will find the original Pixar promotional 996 that introduced Sally Carrera to the world in the 2006 film Cars and the one-of-one 992.1 Sally Special built in 2022 through a collaboration between Pixar Animation Studios and Porsche’s Sonderwunsch custom program.

The 996 that became Sally was never meant to be a road car. It was built as a full-scale model for promotional purposes, toured Porsche dealerships and eventually found a permanent home at the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen. The 992 Sally Special started as a Carrera GTS, then spent ten months in the hands of Porsche’s Sonderwunsch team and Style Porsche designers working alongside the original Pixar crew. The result was a road-legal, one-of-a-kind 911 wearing exclusive Sally Blue Metallic paint and 996-inspired five-spoke wheels, finished down to a Von Dutch-style pinstripe on the rear spoiler. It sold at auction for $3.6 million for charity.

Highlights

  • A one-off creation by Porsche in collaboration with Disney and Pixar
  • Based on the 473-hp 911 Carrera GTS
  • Equipped with a seven-speed manual transmission

Unveiled during Monterey Car Week in 2022, the unique 911 Sally Special sold for an impressive $3.6 million at an RM Sotheby’s auction.

Although Cars premiered in 2006, development began years earlier. Production designer Bob Pauley first sketched Sally Carrera in 2002. True to her name, Sally is an anthropomorphic Porsche 911 Carrera—specifically inspired by a 2002 model from the 996 generation.

While the film itself is now nearly two decades old, Sally as a character has been around even longer. To celebrate her legacy, Porsche teamed up with Pixar to create a one-of-a-kind 2022 911 that brings her personality into the modern era.

Built on the 992-generation Carrera GTS platform, the Sally Special blends contemporary performance with design cues from the 996 generation. Details such as silver headlight surrounds, period-correct rear badging, and staggered five-spoke wheels echo the look of Sally’s original form. That said, Porsche and Pixar wisely skipped adding animated features like eyes or a mouth—and didn’t recruit Bonnie Hunt to narrate the navigation system.

The standout feature is the custom Sally Blue Metallic paint, a hand-applied finish that extends beyond the body to areas typically painted black on a standard Carrera GTS, including the front and rear facias and the engine lid.

Inside, the bespoke theme continues. Sally Blue accents complement Chalk leather upholstery, contrasted with Speed Blue and Chalk stitching. Pepita inserts add a classic touch, blending black, Chalk, and Speed Blue. Additional details include a Chalk-finished lower dashboard, Speed Blue highlights on the steering wheel marker and gear selector, and unique branding throughout the cabin. The dashboard features a special plaque above the glovebox, while illuminated “Sally Special” door sills reinforce its exclusivity. Even the drive mode selector gets a playful twist, with a “Kachow Mode” replacing the standard Sport Response button.
