Top Gear’s Jack Rix breaks down the 2019 Porsche 935, a limited-run, non-homologated track car based on the 911 GT2 RS. Only 77 were built, each inspired by the 1978 935/78 “Moby Dick.”
While it starts with GT2 RS underpinnings, the result is far more extreme. The original 935/78 was known for its dramatic proportions and 845hp twin-turbo flat-six. The modern 935 produces 690hp from a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six, hitting 0–60 mph in 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph.
It features extensive carbon-fiber bodywork, stretching nearly five meters long and over two meters wide, plus a massive 1.9-meter rear wing. Design cues reference Porsche race cars past and present, including aero wheels inspired by Moby Dick, 908-style exhausts, and 919-derived LED lighting.
Inside, it’s a single-seat race cockpit with a roll cage, fire extinguisher, telemetry display, and multi-button steering wheel. However, it retains some 911 elements like the gear lever, ignition key, and even air conditioning. It’s eligible for select race series but is best treated as an exclusive, high-value track toy rather than a wheel-to-wheel racer.
