The Audrain Museum Network reviews the Porsche 911 RS America, a lightweight, performance-focused version of the 964 Carrera 2 built specifically for the U.S. market. Inspired by earlier RS models that were never officially sold in America, Porsche produced about 700 RS America examples with reduced weight and simplified equipment.
Weight savings came from removing the rear seats, simplifying the door panels, and deleting features like power steering. Although only about 80 pounds lighter than a standard Carrera 2, the car feels more direct and engaging, especially through its heavier but more communicative steering. The manual steering is effortful at low speeds but becomes more responsive as speed increases.
Powered by a torquey flat-six engine, the RS America delivers strong midrange performance rather than relying on high revs. Its handling rewards smooth braking and confident turn-in, giving the driver a balanced and satisfying experience.
Despite being a 1990s sports car, the RS America still feels modern and usable, combining everyday practicality with classic 911 character. It stands out as more than a cosmetic special edition, offering a genuinely engaging drive at a lower cost than earlier Carrera RS models.
